Sonoma Family Meal in Santa Rosa: Food, Community, and a New Home

If you’ve been in Santa Rosa for a while, you probably remember the Tubbs fire in 2017. It was one of the hardest moments in our community’s history, thousands of homes gone, families displaced, neighbors suddenly without kitchens or even a safe place to eat. That’s when Sonoma Family Meal was born.

Heather Irwin, a local food writer, gathered chefs, restaurants, and volunteers to do what we do best here, feed people. In just four weeks, nearly 20,000 comforting, chef-made meals made their way to fire survivors. It was food as comfort, food as hope, food as connection. And honestly, it changed everything for us. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a nonprofit that’s served more than 750,000 meals across Sonoma County.

Now, we’re coming full circle. Santa Rosa has always been at the heart of our story, and we’re thrilled to open a new location here, offering catering in Santa Rosa and kitchen rental in Santa Rosa.

Catering in Santa Rosa: Delicious Food with Heart

The process is simple: tour, apply, get approved, and you’re off and running, sometimes in as little as a week. And while you’re building your food dream, you’re also helping us keep our programs alive. It’s community supporting community, right under one roof.

Programs That Make a Difference

Opening this Santa Rosa space isn’t just about food businesses and catering, it’s also about expanding the programs that mean so much to us and our neighbors.

Culinary Job Training

Our free, six-week bilingual program helps people facing barriers to employment build culinary skills, earn a ServSafe certificate, and connect with local restaurant jobs. Graduates often find work in Santa Rosa kitchens or even launch businesses of their own using our rental space.

Food Security Meals

Every month, we prepare about 1,000 ready-to-heat meals for families and seniors struggling with food insecurity. These meals aren’t just calories, they’re wholesome, chef-made dishes that bring comfort and ease a little bit of the daily stress.

Food Recovery & Sustainability

Did you know Californians throw away the equivalent of 2.5 billion meals every year? We work with farms, businesses, and partners like Zero Waste Sonoma to rescue surplus food and turn it into nourishing meals. It’s good for people, good for farmers, and good for the planet.

Let’s Do This Together

We’ve always believed that food is more than just what’s on the plate, it’s about connection, resilience, and community. And now, with our new Santa Rosa home, there are so many ways you can be part of this journey with Sonoma Family Meal
