Expanding to Sonoma Valley
As part of Sonoma Family Meal’s recent acquisition of Sonoma Overnight Support, we have assumed operation of The Unity Kitchen, located in the city of Sonoma. Under SFM, Unity Kitchen will continue to offer essential Monday–Friday meal services to the most vulnerable Springs residents, including food-insecure seniors, transitional youth, and the unhoused, serving over 200 meals per day. We are grateful to our trusted community partners for providing wraparound services to anyone who walks through the door as well.
Building on Unity Kitchen’s foundations, SFM plans to expand both programming and social enterprise into Sonoma Valley. In 2026, we will introduce two new flagship programs: a teen culinary apprenticeship program and a small food business incubation initiative, designed in collaboration with local partners including La Luz and Sonoma Teen Services. These upstream efforts aim to provide skills, hands-on work experience, income pathways, and business development support, addressing the root causes of food insecurity by empowering individuals and families economically. In this way, Unity Kitchen will not only continue meeting the immediate need for nutritious meals—it will also evolve into a hub for economic empowerment, tackling the root causes of food insecurity through opportunity and entrepreneurship, while raising vital funds for the programs.
The History of Unity Kitchen
In the late 1990s, a group of Sonoma volunteers began looking for ways to bring shelter to the homeless. In 2003, they formed a nonprofit called Sonoma Overnight Support (SOS) that provided overnight shelter in churches and motels to families in need. With support from the State and City of Sonoma, SOS purchased a four-bedroom home known as The Haven in 2007, which provided much needed housing, as well as access to showers and laundry, to those in need until early 2024.
2021 brought a shift in focus and an expansion of SOS’ food program to address the growing critical needs of Sonoma Valley, and in 2023, the Unity Kitchen was established to provide nourishing meals to those facing food insecurity. In 2024, the dedicated team of staff and volunteers proudly prepared over 76,000 meals and connected individuals with other essential resources through collaborative partnerships with other local organizations, ensuring a holistic approach to supporting clients’ well-being.
Amidst dramatic federal funding cuts, and the financial strain that came with rising demand for meal service, SOS approached Sonoma Family Meal in March of 2025 to begin conversation about assuming its operations in order to effectively continue feeding those in need in Sonoma Valley. SFM officially acquired the Unity Kitchen on September 2, 2025. Read the full press release here.
