Food Help and Community Programs in Sonoma County

At Sonoma Family Meal, we believe good food can change everything. Whether it’s showing up with hot meals for people in need, teaching kitchen skills that build careers, or catering your next event, our goal is simple: feed our neighbors and build a stronger Sonoma County

What started in 2017 as a grassroots effort to cook for fire survivors has grown into a community-powered nonprofit and social enterprise that supports thousands of people every year with emergency meal services in Sonoma County and so much more.

Emergency Meal Services Sonoma County Can Count On

When tough times hit, whether it’s a disaster, a job loss, or just trying to stretch the monthly budget ,Sonoma Family Meal is here with comforting, chef-made meals.

  • Disaster Relief: Since the Tubbs Fire, we’ve delivered more than 750,000 meals to families, first responders, and evacuees.

  • Everyday Support: We team up with local groups like McDowell Family Resource Center, ELIM, and CURA to get oven-ready meals into the hands of parents, seniors, and anyone struggling with food insecurity.

  • Locally Sourced: Whenever possible, we use ingredients from nearby farms or food recovered from local businesses, so every meal not only nourishes people, but also supports our food system.

If you’re looking for food help Sonoma County, you can count on us to show up with a warm plate and a caring hand.

More Than a Kitchen: Our Community Programs

Of course, Sonoma Family Meal is about more than rentals and catering. These services help us fund the heart of our mission, programs that directly support Sonoma County families.

Culinary Job Training

One of the best ways we fight hunger is by creating opportunity. That’s why we run Sonoma County’s only tuition-free Culinary Job Training Program

It’s not just about learning to chop onions (though we cover that too). Students gain:

  • Six weeks of bilingual, hands-on training in a real kitchen

  • A full knife set, uniform, and weekly stipend

  • Job readiness and financial literacy support

  • ServSafe certification

  • Connections to good-paying jobs in local restaurants and food businesses

Graduates leave with the skills and confidence to build a career in the food industry and many even come back to mentor the next round of students.

Catering with a Cause

Here’s a cool idea: what if your next event could serve your guests and your community? That’s exactly what happens when you book Catering with a Cause

We cook up delicious, farm-to-table menus for nonprofits, companies, and events across Sonoma County. Think:

  • Family-style meals or buffets for groups of 10 or more

  • Custom menus that change with the seasons

  • Options for vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs

Every catering order helps fund our training programs and meal services. So your team lunch or gala dinner does a whole lot of good beyond the table.

Meal Subscription with Meaning

Picture this: It’s Tuesday night, you’re tired, and instead of cooking, you grab a freshly made, heat-and-eat dinner from Sonoma Family Meal. That’s the beauty of our Provisions Meal Subscription

Subscribers get:

  • Globally inspired, chef-made dinners each week

  • Pickup in Petaluma or Santa Rosa

  • Peace of mind knowing your meal also supports families in need

It’s dinner for your household, and dinner for someone else’s too.

Rent Our Community Kitchen

Got a food business dream? Our 3,100-square-foot kitchen in Petaluma is available to rent. Bakers, food truck owners, and small-batch makers all use it to grow their businesses.

We offer affordable rates, plenty of prep space, ovens, mixers, steamers, you name it. And every rental helps us keep funding meals and training programs.

Why We Care About Sustainability

Food waste is a big issue, California sends billions of pounds of edible food to landfills every year. At Sonoma Family Meal, we do our part by rescuing food that would otherwise be wasted and turning it into healthy, delicious meals.

By working with Zero Waste Sonoma and local businesses, we not only fight hunger but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support a more climate-friendly food system.
